A little research goes a long way. Researching your niche online will reveal whether there is a potential market. How do you research? You do this by using a keyword that pertains to your niche but do not limit yourself to only one keyword. For example, let us use “needle pointing” as our keyword. When determining a keyword (s) you have to think of a word or phrase that internet surfers would use in the search engines to find information relating to that subject. For example, will people use needle pointing, needlepointing, ideas for needle pointing, needle point patterns, to search for needle pointing topics?
You need to create a list of possible keywords for your niche and select one that has the greater market potential. That is what the following information will explain.
Go to adwords.com. Click on “Get keyword ideas” in the middle of the page. Leave everything checked that is checked right now and type your keyword in the box that says to enter keyword, type in characters that are displayed in the little box and then click the button that says get keyword ideas.
What will come up next are single words or phrases relating to the keyword you typed in the search box.
What you are looking for are keywords that have a good monthly search volume, cost-per-click (CPC), and advertisers in that market. Search volume will tell you the volume of searches per month for a particular keyword.
Cost-per-click is a way to advertise your website. What businesses do is pay popular search engines a certain amount of money every time someone clicks on their ads and directs them to their website. Thus fore cost-per-click or CPC. Why would I do that? This is done to position a website better in the search engines for a particular keyword. When you search for a particular keyword in the search engines, ads appear on the page, you can bet the first few ads are paying a higher CPC to position themselves in the number one, two, or three spots. Everyone wants to be number one for visibility.
The last bit of information is advertisers in a particular market. If the market is saturated with, advertisers then that could be good or bad. If there are, many advertisers that may mean the market is a popular market, which is good. However, this means too that it may be hard to break into that market. If your niche market has a few advertisers this might be a potential market for you to shine.
This is not an exact science when it comes to search volume, CPC, and advertisers. Many marketers will give you different figures to look for. What I look for is a keyword relating to my niche that has a favorable monthly search volume, and a decent amount of paid advertisers in that market. I stay away from any keywords that are very popular with a high search volume of over 20,000. I cannot compete with the amount of money I like to spend starting a business. Your goal is to narrow it down to a specific niche. Look for low cost per clicks, search volumes from 2500 – 5000, and below average advertisers.
Make a list of the keywords that fall into these categories with the search volumes, CPC, and volume of advertisers. The additional keywords can be used to narrow you niche or for additional niches within your niche.
I know this is a long process but the work you put into this will pay off in the end.
Now you have another set of keywords. You will take those keywords, go to your favorite search engine, and do a search for that keyword or keyword phrase. When searching make sure, your keyword or keyword phrase is in quotations. Example: “needling pointing”. This is an exact keyword search.
Now what you are looking for is the results of your search. How many results appear for “needle pointing”? (23,200) However in the dictionary needle point is one word. So now, I search for “needlepointing”. I came up with 8,310 results. I am going to check the rest of my keywords for results. What I am looking for is competing websites pertaining to my keywords.
Also within those results of competing websites could be additional niche business ideas and possible profitable markets I can target.
